A Spicy Cuban Sandwich

Here is a recipe for a traditional Cuban sandwich made spicy by smoking the ham with a superhot chili pepper-mustard rub.

  • 4 slices Italian bread or Cuban bread if you can find it
  • 4 thick slices cooked ham I used my superhot rubbed, smoked ham
  • 4 thick slices cooked pork shoulder or loin
  • 2 slices Swiss cheese
  • Sliced pickles for topping
  • Yellow mustard for topping
  • 1 tablespoon butter melted

  1. Preheat a large skillet to medium-high heat.
  2. Layer 2 slices of bread each with ham, pork, pickles, Swiss cheese and mustard. Top with remaining bread slices.
  3. Brush the tops and bottoms of the sandwiches with butter.
  4. Set each sandwich into the skillet and PRESS them down with something heavy, like the bottom of another skillet or a sandwich press. Get it down there good! Cook about 3-5 minutes.
  5. Flip and repeat. Get them nice and pressed!
  6. Remove, slightly cool, slice and serve.
